Richard Speas
Greetings from Richard Speas (Dick Speas), an experienced intercollegiate coach and athletic administrator who has been in the business of higher education for 20 years.
Richard (Dick) Speas is a native of Union, Iowa. The Speas bio contains a diverse background in higher education, as he has held the positions of Director of Athletics, Assistant Director of Athletics, Department Head of Human Performance and Leisure Studies, Instructor, Assistant Director of Admissions, head coach in several sports, and assistant coach. As the Director of Athletics at one of the elite NJCAA college athletic programs (Blinn College, Brenham,TX), Richard Speas oversaw an athletic program that won an NJCAA (Division I) national championship in volleyball. The other sports also fared well, as baseball, football, and softball all held national rankings. The Buccaneer softball team would finish 4th in the nation twice during Speas tenure, with football finishing 10th in the nation, and competing in a bowl game. An accomplished athletic fundraiser, Speas was instrumental in raising $25,000 in HOT funds to anchor the creation of the Brazos Valley Bowl in College Station. Speas also led the initative to secure an exclusive rights beverage contract for Blinn College, securing a 720,000 plus guarantee over five years. On-line sales of athletic wares and apparel also created a new revenue stream for athletics. In addition corporate donors and advertising sales were enhanced. Prior to his arrival at Western Texas College (Snyder, Texas) Speas served as the Director of Athletics from 2008-2011. During this time, the college saw a significant increase in enrollment and the growth of its athletic programs. Hosting 15 intercollegiate programs, Speas also oversaw the college golf course, college farm, and rodeo grounds. The Westerners and Lady Westerners held national rankings in men's and women's cross-country, men's basketball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's rodeo, and men's and women's soccer. The men's rodeo team would capture a national championship in 2009.During his tenure at the helm of the Western Texas College athletic program, the college under went major facility enhancements to indoor and outdoor venues. The community was energized with the aquisition of The Coliseum, a 4,000 seat multi-purpose facility. Upgrades made to The Coliseum included a new playing floor for basketball, a new four-sided scoreboard suspended from the ceiling, new scorer's tables, goals,and remodeled locker rooms. A new athletic training room was also constructed on campus. Land was also secured and the first phase of the Cavender Sports Complex was completed with new game (Weaver Field) and practice soccer fields. Sports marketing and branding strategies also helped to increase and enhance the identity and image of Western Texas College during the time Speas served as the Director of Athletics at Western Texas College. The visibility of the athletic department was improved through the increase in revenue streams to the athletic department. Richard Speas served as the Director of Athletics at Peru State College (NAIA) from 2006-2008. Speas was involved in a seven million dollar renovation of the Al Wheeler Activity Center on campus. While at Peru State, attendance at athletic events increased, new athletic transportation was aquired, and athletic fundraising was enhanced. Serving as the inaugural Director of Athletics at Southern Virginia University, Richard Speas initiated and expanded the athletic program to 14 intercollegiate sports. Speas spearheaded efforts that led to a 400% enrollment growth of the college. In addition to serving as the Director of Athletics, Speas instituted and served as the head of the Human Performance and Leisure Studies program, and coached cross-country, track, baseball, and softball during his time at Southern Virginia University. The Speas slate also includes a nine year stint at William Penn University in Iowa, where he served in various capacities, including the assistnat athletic director, assistant director of admissions, instructor, head men's and women's cross-country coach, head men's and women's track and field coach, and head assistant baseball coach. Speas was named conference coach of the year in men's cross-country, men's conference coach of the year for track and field, and NAIA region V men's cross-country coach of the year while at William Penn University
